Rescue Your Skin This Winter

Rescue Your Skin This Winter

By Gay Kennedy - One of our Skin Experts

Winter in Wānaka is breathtaking - but your skin might be feeling less inspired. From icy winds to indoor heating and altitude extremes, our local climate is tough on the skin. It’s no wonder so many of our clients feel dry, dull, or more sensitive during these colder months. The good news? A few smart swaps and the right skincare can protect and nourish your skin all winter long. Here’s how to rescue your glow-and the Pure Skin-approved products to help you do it.

Step 1: Cleanse Gently (Not Aggressively!)

Over-cleansing and over-exfoliating are the biggest culprits behind dry, sensitized skin. If your face feels squeaky clean after washing - chances are you’ve stripped away your skin’s natural protective barrier, known as the acid mantle. This delicate film of oil and water (think of it like the waxy layer on an apple) helps your skin retain moisture and defend against environmental stress.

Avoid soap and harsh cleansers - especially in Wānaka, where your skin needs every bit of natural oil it can get! Our go-to winter picks:

Step 2: Upgrade to Targeted Skincare

Winter is the perfect time to step up your skincare game with results-driven, skin-loving ingredients. As we age, our skin’s ability to retain moisture and bounce back slows down - especially post-menopause. This is where high-performance actives like Vitamin C and Retinol make all the difference.

At Pure, we believe in nurturing skin with science-backed, gentle formulations - no parabens, harsh chemicals, or synthetic fragrances. Winter skin heroes:

Step 3: Keep Showers Short & Lukewarm

As tempting as a steaming hot shower might be, it’s one of the quickest ways to strip your skin of moisture. Stick to lukewarm water and avoid washing your face directly under the stream to prevent flushing and dehydration.

Step 4: SPF Isn’t Just for Summer

UVA rays don’t hibernate - so your sun protection shouldn’t either. Winter UV exposure is real (especially on the slopes), so it’s essential to use a physical sunblock with zinc or titanium dioxide daily. Our top SPF picks:

Always check the label - your SPF should list zinc or titanium in the first 2–3 ingredients for proper protection.

Step 5: Feed Your Skin From Within

Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on - it’s about what you put in. Essential fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6 help reinforce your skin barrier and reduce dryness and inflammation. Try flaxseed oil, evening primrose, or a good-quality fish oil supplement for winter skin support (and bonus: great hair and nails too!).

Step 6: Balance Coffee & Alcohol

We get it - there’s nothing like a hot coffee on a frosty morning or a glass of red by the fire. But both can dehydrate your skin. Try to balance every caffeinated or alcoholic drink with a glass of water, and reach for herbal teas whenever possible.

Step 7: Prioritise Rest, Movement & Joy

Beautiful skin is also a reflection of your overall wellbeing. Prioritise sleep, move your body, spend time with people who lift you up - and laugh often. Your skin will thank you for it.
